Curly Hair Shampoo without Sulphates, Clarifying shampoo and Co Washes

If you have curly hair or have treated it, one of the most important things to understand is that everyone's hair is different.Your hair may not react the same way to  certain products as someone with a similar  same curl type o pattern. Additionally, using a product the wrong way can make you hate or in some cases love a product. What works for you may not work for someone else, and that's okay!

That  being said, there are some curly hair products that many people find effective and can agree on gives them bomb results!

Here are some  'universal' curly hair products and what they are used, as it can get quite confusing with so many choices and just the names of these curly hair products…whew! Let's begin!

First on our list is shampoo. Most of the shampoos used today by many people with curly hair are sulfate-free, clarifying shampoos and cowashes. Sulfate-free shampoos became a thing a few years ago with the growth of the Natural Hair Movement and the Curly Girl Method

Why use a sulfate-free shampoo on curly hair?

Sulfates are cleansing agents used in shampoos that tend to give a foamy texture. Some sulfates can be harsh on curls, which are more prone to drying due to the curly nature of the hair and the fact that sebum travels down the strand much more slowly. It's pretty easy to find sulfate-free shampoo; many curly hair products today are sulfate-free, silicone-free and so on...

Sulfate-free shampoos tend to be gentler for those with curly hair, but may not be too effective, especially if you use a lot of products on your hair. That's where purifying shampoos come in. Now, sulfates aren't bad and tend to be demonized in the Curly Hair Community but many girls with curly hair swear by sulfates anyway...

In the list of products for curly hair, here are five of the best sulfate-free shampoos:

When to use clarifying shampoos?

Purifying shampoos: one thing to know about clarifying shampoos and that they are not made for daily use! A purifying shampoo helps to deeply cleanse hair of product buildup or environmental impurities, and using it too frequently can leave hair feeling dry and stripped of its natural oils.

Who can benefit from a purifying shampoo:

  • Those who frequently use the swimming pool to remove chlorine from their hair.

  • Hard Water: For those who live in an area where the water is hard, a clarifying shampoo will remove deposits of minerals and other substances on your hair.

Products: In your daily hair routine, we use styling products, leave-in conditioners, and many other products that over time make our hair dull and lifeless. An excellent clarifying shampoo deeply cleans curls and removes product build-up!

Co Wash and Curly Hair

Co washing, or washing with conditioner,  started with the  curly girl movement. At the time, there were few curly hair products that were not harsh on our curls. Instead of frequent washing with shampoo, which tends to remove the natural oils of our curls and dry out the hair, conditioners were used. You can now find products advertised as co washes that contain very gentle cleansing agents for your curls.

Co washes are great for those who go to the gym or do a lot of physical activity and sweat a lot, as well as for those who often go to the pool. They are also suitable for those who like to wash their hair several times a week.

However, it is important to note that co washing should not completely replace washing your hair with regular shampoo, which is more effective at removing dirt and impurities. Here are some popular cowash products:
